Selected as best alternative COBRA plan for short-term medical coverage while in between jobs.

When Should You Use Short-Term Health Insurance?

During a gap in insurance coverage, a short-term health insurance plan can provide you with basic medical care. These plans have low premiums and give fewer “essential health coverage” than full ACA health policies. Most of these plans are valid for up to a year, but you can cancel at any time without penalty.

Who Uses Temporary Health Insurance?

  • Individuals who missed the ACA exchange deadlines and must wait until the next enrollment period
  • Individuals who must wait before enrolling in another program
  • People in between jobs or who have been laid off
  • People seeking a less expensive COBRA option
  • Those in need of temporary protection:
    • Students in college or recent graduates
    • Young individuals who are no longer covered by their parent’s health insurance plan
    • Retirees who are awaiting Medicare eligibility
    • Coverage for dependents who are not covered by an employer plan

Short-Term Medical is not for everyone. It’s important to understand what’s not covered so you don’t get caught off guard if you’re not the right customer for this product, including but not limited to:

  • Pre-existing conditions are not covered
  • Dental and eye care are not covered
  • Prescriptions (unless prescribed during a covered hospitalization) are not covered
  • Like most health insurance plans, services are subject to Usual Customary and Reasonable (UCR) review to determine the Maximum Allowed Expense.

We want your plan to work for you. Thatā€™s why itā€™s also important to know that Everest STM is not considered ā€œminimal essential coverageā€ under the federal Affordable Care Act and that you may be subject to a tax penalty.
